The economy’s going down and gas prices are going up. That adds up to more sales of compact cars. According to data from AutoPacific, compared to last year, sales of compact cars have risen 11.4 % for the first 6 months of 2008. Of course, they’re expected to keep going up.

According to data from SEMA, car models with the biggest increase for the first half of the year include:

  • Honda Fit 67.40% (from 23,769 to 39,787)
  • Hyundai Accent 48.90% (from 18,926 to 26,400)
  • Toyota Yaris 39% (from 46,522 to 64,680)

Of course, the good old Honda Civic still leads the pack with 204,961 cars sold for an increase of 17.90% over last year’s number of 173,800.

For November issue, we’re choosing some products to upgrade a selection of cars on a budget. My pick, given the economy and my frugal nature, will definitely be of the smallish variety.
