Garmin apparently felt ill at ease that competitor TomTom wants to buy the digital mapmaker. Apparently, they weren't too ill at ease, withdrawing their $3.3 billion bid last week.
Currently, Garmin gets the majority of its maps from Navteq, which Nokia is acquiring. They've already inked a deal in which Garmin continues to have access to their maps until 2015.
All this buying and almost-buying of the two digital mapmakers raises some eyebrows around the office. Other navigation device makers should have no reason to worry, though. Nokia and TomTom have no intention, so they say, of cutting off access to maps once Navteq and TeleAtlas are acquired.
